George Mason University has relieved Paul Hewitt from his head coaching duties the school announced Monday morning. Hewitt took over the team four years ago after Jim Larranaga left to take the University of Miami job.
Hewitt was 66-67 in four seasons at the school, but struggled the last two seasons after switching from the Colonel Athletic Conference to the A-10. The Patriots finished this season with a record of 9-24.
“Paul has always been a tremendous advocate for the sport of college basketball,” Athletic Director Brad Edwards said. “We are extremely appreciative for the manner in which he has represented the university and for his service to the student-athletes and to the program.”
Before arriving at George Mason, Hewitt was the head coach at Georgia Tech for 11 seasons, going to the NCAA tournament five times including a trip to the National Championship in 2004 where the Yellow Jackets lost to a Uconn team that was led by Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon.
