The National Football League has been around for more than 100 years. In that time span, only 13 quarterbacks have won more than one Super Bowl. Only six of those quarterbacks have earned Super Bowl MVP honors more than once. How many are Black? There has only been one and his name is Patrick Lavon Mahomes II.
As the clock wound down in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII, history was made. Kansas City became one of only 10 teams to win three or more Super Bowl titles and Mahomes entered into unprecedented territory for a Black quarterback.
Kansas City’s journey to NFL glory was not smooth. Heading into this weekend’s showdown, the Texas Tech standout was forced to fight through a high ankle sprain. Once the Chiefs took the field, things only became more difficult as the Eagles drove down the field and put up a touchdown on their opening drive. At halftime, the Eagles had already developed a ten-point lead, but that wasn’t enough to stop Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Mahomes and the Chiefs came out of the locker room with a point to prove. Powered by great defensive performances and impressive play on special teams, the Chiefs were able to outscore the Eagles 21-3 through the first 21 minutes of play. The Eagles were able to come back and tie the game, but Mahomes was able to lead his team down for a game-winning field goal in Glendale, Arizona.
