While Minnesota inherits a point guard who will help its poor defense, the Grizzlies receive an intriguing project in Culver, fitting for a team emphasizing developing younger players.
Beverley seldom played in the first-round series versus the Dallas Mavericks in last season’s playoffs. However, his minutes increased following the seven-game battle. The hard-nosed point guard saw his minutes ascend from 10.3 minutes per contest to 17.9 against the Utah Jazz, then 27.4 in the Western Conference Finals series versus the Phoenix Suns.
During the 2021 postseason, Beverley’s offense suffered more than usual. Although never confused with an elite 3-point shooter, he typically contributes more than his Western Conference Finals numbers suggest. Beverley converted on 33% of his 3-point field goals versus the 2021 NBA Finals runner-up Suns.
After four seasons in LA, the veteran point guard is in a new scenario. With the Timberwolves, Beverley comes as a much-needed locker room presence and quite possibly will jolt the pulseless Timberwolves defense.
