Chief operating officer Tina Becker said in a statement:
“We are very fortunate to have Marty as our general manager after he did an exceptional job in the interim role this past season. Marty’s guidance and vision helped build the foundation for this team, and his work this season was instrumental in returning the team to the playoffs. We believe he will continue to craft a roster that will win games and contend for a championship.”
This is not the first time Hurney will serve as general manager for the Panthers. Originally, Hurney was with the Panthers from 1998 to 2012, serving as the general manager from 2002 through six games into the 2012 season. He agreed to step down after the team started the year 1-5.
Hurney was rehired by the Panthers after former general manager Dave Gettleman was fired last summer. He served as interim general manager the entire 2017-2018 season.
The past season went well for the Panthers. Quarterback Cam Newton returned to an MVP level of play and led the team to an 11-5 record. Their kryptonite was the New Orleans Saints, who beat them twice in the regular season as well as in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
