Here’s a statement from Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson on the firing.
After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager. I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed.
The Panthers finished 6-10 last year and missed the playoffs for the first time with Gettleman as GM. The Panthers were 40-23 overall under Gettleman, with their best year coming in ’15. They went 15-1 and lost to the Broncos in the Super Bowl, 24-10.
They weren’t exactly bad under Gettleman.

NFL Insider for NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport thinks Josh Norman’s departure started the bad blood between Richardson and Gettleman.
There had been rumblings that all was not well with Gettleman and owner Jerry Richardson stemming from allowing star CB Josh Norman to walk.

The craziest thing about this firing? Panthers training camp starts July 26.
The timing is nuts. #Panthers people were all on vacation. GM Dave Gettleman returns… & finds himself as a former GM. Camp starts in a week
