Packers defensive end Datone Jones will be suspended without pay for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Jones is the 4th player today to be suspended including Rolando McClain, Antonio Gates, and Sheldon Richardson.
Jones will miss the week one affair against bitter rival Chicago, but will be eligible to return against Seattle in Week two. Jones will be needed in week two if Green Bay hopes to avenge its ugly loss to Seattle in last year’s NFC Title game. Jones managed to only record 1.5 sacks for Green Bay but is considered a crucial part of the team’s run defense.
With Josh Boyd and starter Mike Daniels already on the roster the team may decide against picking up Datone’s option following the 2016 season. So far the former UCLA product has not lived up to his first round expectations. This suspension certainly doesn’t help but Green Bay will need Jones to develop in order to continue to sport their good defense.
