Through three seasons, Netflix’s Outer Banks has emerged as one of the platform’s most successful shows. Earning rave reviews from fans and critics, the show is expected to return for its fourth chapter in the future. With that said, some fans feel there is one particular way that the show could improve.
“They’re blatantly not acknowledging the realities and repercussions of race/racism,” one fan said about the show.
“Outer Banks writers vs acknowledging the blatant racism Pope faces,” another fan tweeted.
Moving forward, Outer Banks star Madison Bailey hopes the show will do a better job of directly addressing issues of race and racism.
“I think it would be good on the writers’ part to start considering that critique—slightly late but better late than never,” she said during a recent interview.
“In season 2, we added Carlacia [Grant] to our main cast. She brings a vibe to set that we very much needed. I think it’d be in the writers’ best interests to start emphasizing it more.”
Specifically, Bailey feels that her character, Kiara Carrera, could be used to address the complex realities of being biracial.
“You have three characters who are Black, and I’ll speak on my character specifically,” she told Cosmopolitan.
“Her whole theme is a foot in both worlds, and we’re lacking a huge part of that, which is her race. That said, there are moments. They’re too brief, but there are moments.”
