’12 Years a Slave’ has won Best Picture.
Director Steve McQueen dedicated his Oscar to anyone who has been affected by slavery.
“This is the most important legacy of Solomon Northup,” said McQueen. “I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery, and the 21 million people who still suffer slavery today.”
Then he literally jumped for joy.
The film took home two other awards including Lupita Nyong’o win for Best Supporting Actress and John Ridley for Best Adapted Screenplay.
It beat out tough competition that also included “American Hustle,” ”Captain Phillips,” ”Dallas Buyers Club,” ”Gravity,” ”Her,” ”Nebraska,” ”Philomena,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
’12 Years a Slave’ has grossed $140 million worldwide.
