NBA legend Oscar Robertson accomplished a lot during his 14-year NBA career, but what he’s best remembered for is averaging a triple-double over the course of an entire season. Robertson, who accomplished the feat in 1961-61, is the only player ever to do so. Robertson hopes to see Oklahoma City Thunder point guard follow in his footsteps this season, he told Shaun Powell on NBA TV:
“I wouldn’t care, I hope he gets it. Why should I care, man? I hope he does. I think it’s great to talk about it. I think the NBA today, they need stars.”
Robertson also said that he didn’t keep track of his triple-doubles or even know what a triple-double was back in his playing days.
Robertson, who played for the Cincinatti Royals at the time, averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists per game in 1961-62. Westbrook is currently averaging 31.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game.
While speaking with Powell, Robertson emphasized his belief that winning outweighs stats or triple-doubles. The ’62 royals won 43 games. Westbrook’s Thunder are currently on pace to win 47.
