So who was snubbed this year? Quite a few people actually! Let’s start with the biggest category, Best Picture. I know I wasn’t the only one who was shocked to see ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ there. It’s currently at a low 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been absent from the majority of awards season. What about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’? ‘Drive’? Or ‘Shame’?
Speaking of ‘Shame,’ it seems the voters completely forgot about this film! How could Michael Fassbender not receive a Best Actor nomination? It was arguably one of the best performances of the year. Maybe the Academy was thrown off by the NC-17 rating (and frequent full frontal nudity by Fassbender). Whatever the reason, his exclusion is a total travesty and probably the biggest surprise for me.
Who’s up next? Well that would be Shailene Woodley for Best Supporting Actress as George Clooney’s spunky teenage daughter in ‘The Descendants.’ She owned this role and in my opinion was the most likeable character in the film. Woodley provided a charismatic performance but also pulled at your heart strings during the more emotional moments.
And what about ‘The Adventures of Tin Tin’ for Best Animated Feature? I admit this was a poor year for animated films but ‘Tin Tin’ stood out among the rest (even taking home the statue at this year’s Golden Globes).
Other notable snubs include David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Steven Spielberg (War Horse) in the Best Director category. And while many believe Ryan Gosling deserved recognition for ‘Drive,’ I was rooting for Albert Brooks in the Best Supporting Actor category but sadly that didn’t happen either.
Maybe I’m being too hard on the Academy, but when an award show prides itself on being the best I expect the nominations to reflect that! But who am I kidding, this won’t stop me from watching and I’m sure no one else either!
Be sure to tune in to the 84th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26th, on ABC.
