With being just 4 games out in a competitive AL East, the Baltimore Orioles appear to be buyers in the upcoming trade deadline. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports has reported the O’s are interested in acquiring Justin Upton’s services.
Later Fox Sports added Carlos Gomez was also on the team’s radar.
The O’s are not the first team to show pursuit of the two outfielders as the Mets have already been known to be one of the potential suitors. Upton will come at a much cheaper price tag as he is in the final season of his contract set to hit free agency next season. Upton is hitting .252 with 15 homers but says he is not ready to give up on the Padres just yet.
“At this point, I haven’t given up on the team,” Upton said via ESPN. “I really like the guys, and I like the clubhouse. We still have some time to change the minds of the front office. In a perfect world, we play well over the next two or three weeks and A.J. pumps the brakes on dismantling the team.”
As for Gomez, the Orioles would likely have to give up a pretty appealing trade package to acquire him from Milwaukee. Gomez will be a free agent in 2017 and commands a cheap salary ($9 million) so his price tag could be substantially higher. Top pitching prospects Tyler Harvey or Dylan Bundy may have to be apart of any deal for the 29 year old center-fielder.
