The Oklahoma City Thunder are making a small move to bolster their squad. According to Yahoo’s Shams Charania, the Thunder are signing big-man Nazr Mohammed for the rest of the season.
Mohammed, a 6’10” big-man, last played in the 2014-15 season for the Chicago Bulls. In only 23 games, the center scored 1.2 points and grabbed 1.7 rebounds per game. Mohammed also played for the Thunder from 2010 to 2012. Now 38 years old, it is clear he will not be asked to do much on the court.
Mohammed can at least provide some veteran leadership in the locker room, for a team that has struggled in games against the NBA’s elite. With the team reeling (relatively speaking) from several blown leads in recent games, that can be an important addition.
Nevertheless, it is difficult to see much benefit from a move like this. The Thunder need tangible help on the court in order to compete against the likes of the Warriors and Spurs. Mohammed does not fill a position of need, nor does he provide much on the court at the positions he does play.
Perhaps the veteran leadership will be worth the roster spot OKC gives up, but it’s hard not to envision a slightly more impactful signing this late into the season.
