Oklahoma City are in dire straights. The basketball Gods have not been kind to the Thunder this past month.
First it was Mitch McGary, then Kevin Durant, then Russell Westbrook and just last night they lost Perry Jones and Reggie Jackson. They ended up with only six players last night. That’s unheard of. Except last season where Chris Kaman could sleep on the Lakers bench because it was so empty.
But according to NewsOK, the Oklahoma City Thunder are set to sign point guard Ish Smith with a hardship exception.
Here is what a hardship exception is.
The hardship exception allows teams with at least four injured players who will be sidelined for at least two weeks to exceed the 15-player maximum roster. For a team to qualify for the exception, all four players must miss at least three consecutive games while sitting out those two weeks.
You may have heard of Ish Smith from his stint with Phoenix last year.
Smith, 26, a 6-foot guard in his fourth year out of Wake Forest, has career per-game averages of 2.9 points, 2.0 assists and 1.4 rebounds.
Smith appeared in 70 games for the Phoenix Suns in 2013-14. He played with the Houston Rockets in preseason.
Smith have gone through a physical and could suit up for the Thunder as early as Friday night.
