The NFL is looking to add Spain and France as locations for future games amid the league’s attempt to grow the brand internationally. 2022 marked the first season that a game was played in Munich, Germany and the league viewed it as a massive success. Fans came out in droves for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 21-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks. London games have also been largely successful since they began. Commissioner Roger Goodell has also envisioned a future where the league has an entire division in Europe. Spain and France are the top two destinations for new sites for professional football games.
The NFL wants to keep its European tour going now that Germany has joined Britain in hosting games.
Spain and France are atop the league’s wish list as it continues to look internationally for revenue growth.

With European games being a success, the NFL will obviously try to expand further into the market moving forward. Germany is also likely to get more games moving forward and the London games are a yearly staple now in the league. The NFL head of the U.K. and Europe Brett Gosper said the following when talking about Europen expansion: “We need to do our homework to make sure that there is the possibility of a place to land any games in those markets, gauge interest of the host stadia, gauge interest of the host city, even the government, as to their enthusiasm to help us bring a game.”
At the moment Spain is viewed to have a slight edge over France. That is due to the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears having “home marketing” rights there. The NFL has divided those rights among ten international countries, but France is not currently on that list. There is currently no word on when games could go to Spain, France, or elsewhere, but it could be as early as the 2023 season.
