The New York Giants are withdrawing their $60 million contract offer to Jason Pierre-Paul. Following the incident on the 4th of July involving a fireworks accident the Giants felt it was their best interest to forego long term extension talks at this time. NFL.com’s Ian Rappoport broke the news involving the recent contract dilemma.

The #Giants pulling their long-term offer may not alter the JPP outcome. He wasn’t going to accept it anyway. https://t.co/mhgUGiECpz

According to Rapoport, JPP was going to decline the Giants offer anyway. The decision may come back to haunt him if the medical reports show that their is significant damage to his hands, something that is vital to a pass rushers skill set. Pierre-Paul may have been a little greedy in declining the offer as the new contract would have made him the 3rd highest paid 4-3 defensive end. Robert Quinn of the St. Louis Rams signed an extension worth $57 million in 2011. Quinn also has recorded 29.5 sacks over the past two seasons compared to JPP’s 14.5.
As of now Pierre-Paul almost has no choice but to play out this season under the franchise tag. Then again this is hardly a bad thing as the tag will pay him $14.8 million in 2015. If there is any breakthrough regarding his health the two sides will have up until the July 15th deadline to work out a long term deal.
