The summer of 2018 has undoubtedly been a good season for people of color on the big screen. Kicking off with feature films like Sorry To Bother You and then transitioning into Blackkklansman and Blindspotting, Hollywood has definitely put together a few socially relevant films. Keeping in line with trend of representing people of color on the big screen, Crazy Rich Asians debuted nationwide this week. Starring Constance Wu and Awkwafina, the Warner Brothers film is much in line with what its title indicates.
The early reviews of the film rave about the film. Rotten Tomatoes states, “With a terrific cast and a surfeit of visual razzle dazzle, Crazy Rich Asians takes a satisfying step forward for screen representation while deftly drawing inspiration from the classic — and still effective — rom-com formula.” Early projections of the film predict that the film will hit anywhere between $25 million and $30 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
In addition to a successful film, Warner Brothers may also have a great soundtrack on its hands. This week, music and movie fans alike got a taste of a new Miguel record that will be on the movie’s soundtrack. The soundtrack cut is produced by the legendary Mark Ronson and Hudson Mohawke. Colored with a sample of “Uptown Funk”, the track has an upbeat vibe that fits portions of the film.
