Yesterday Opera Software unveiled its latest project: Opera Ice. Opera Ice is a WebKit-based mobile browser that is specifically designed for the screens of popular smart phones and tablets, including both iOS and Android devices.
The goal behind this app was to create an easy-to-use design that gets rid of the “clutter” of the usual mobile browser apps such as the URL bar and the refresh/back/forward buttons. The interface is icon-based, allowing you to open up websites with a quick tap to an image. It is also demonstrated that by swiping back on the screen with your fingers you go backwards in your web-history, replacing the back button with a hand movement. Though Opera usually uses the Presto rendering engine, Opera Ice is based on WebKit which is the same engine used by both Apple and Google.
In the video above you can see a quick demonstration of how Opera runs on an iPad.
Opera Ice is set to be available sometime in February.
