Netflix has unveiled a plan to produce limited series based on the work of Roald Dahl. The streaming giant made the announcement Tuesday with a short video teasing the upcoming series. It only shows a few titles of what will likely be adapted first. This ‘first wave’ includes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and James and the Giant Peach. The video does promise “many more” though, signaling Netflix’s long-term plans with the properties.
Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl, released a statement shortly after the announcement. “Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories. This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”
There’s no hint as to what other series may be developed as part of the agreement. However, according to Netflix, the deal includes many of Dahl’s most popular stories. It’s extremely likely we’ll also see adaptations of “The BFG,” “The Magic Finger” and “The Enormous Crocodile.” Production is set to begin on the multiple series sometime next year.
Melissa Cobb, VP of Kids and Family content at Netflix also released a statement regarding the news. “We are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world.”
