Yes, you read that correctly. Months after working to eliminate password sharing between users, Netflix is reportedly working to launch a paid password-sharing program in the United States. As the headline suggests, the program would allow subscribers to share passwords to their Netflix accounts for an added cost. For now, it is unclear how much it would cost U.S. subscribers to partake in this program.
The idea of paid password sharing is not an entirely new idea. Prior to its forthcoming launch in the United States, Netflix has tested the program out in other countries and achieved a level of success executives have become satisfied with. For example, the program launched in Canada not long ago. Subscribers were asked to pay an extra $8 for password sharing capabilities, bringing the total cost of a typical subscription to upwards of $20.
“We’re pleased with the most recent launches of paid sharing, and while we could have launched broadly in Q1, we found opportunities to improve the experience for members,” a letter from the company reads, according to Deadline.
“We learn more with each rollout and we’ve incorporated the latest learnings, which we think will lead to even better results.”
At this time it is unclear when exactly, paid password sharing will make its way to the United States. With that said, subscribers should be on the lookout for it to arrive in America sometime in the second quarter.
