Alright so, Netflix isn’t taking this abuse from ‘Hollywood Elites’ lying down anymore. Bloomberg is reporting that the service is set to start publishing a magazine. It will feature reviews, essays, and interviews about the content offered on the platform. The publication’s main purpose is to promote Netflix’ content ahead of award shows. This comes just a day after reports surfaced that the streaming giant is in talks to purchase the famed Egyptian Theatre.
After mostly striking out at both the Oscars and Golden Globes, Netflix is poised to push even harder for this year’s Emmys. This move also seems to signal a more aggressive, and unorthodox, approach to the classic ‘For Your Consideration’ campaigns run by most studios. They had to try something as their previous strategy of throwing money at their problems didn’t work out so well for them.
“In preparation for a groundbreaking year in film and television, [we have] gathered some of the most talented and sought after writers and photographers, thinkers and creatives, to make the inaugural issue of Wide, the Netflix print journal,” read one email acquired by Bloomberg.
Wide will be a free publication. It won’t be for public consumption at first though. As Netflix plans on only handing out issues at events and screenings put on in the lead up to the Emmys. Personally, I could see the magazine doing well if it were made available to the public. I can count more than a few times when I’ve been so overwhelmed by the sheer content available to stream. But, I guess we’ll see have to wait and see how well-received the publication is first.
Regardless, Netflix stopped playing games this week.
