After two seasons, Netflix has decided to move on from the Spike Lee led original series, She’s Gotta Have It. Led by the beautiful and talented DeWanda Wise, this Netflix adaptation of Spike Lee’s film explored themes of sexuality, gentrification, identity and much more. Alongside Wise, Lee led a star studded cast that included Fat Joe, Anthony Ramos, Margot Bingham and more.
The announcement comes just hours after Netflix reported a major loss in subscribers over the second quarter. For the first time since 2011, Netflix has experienced a loss in U.S. subscribers. Moreover, Netflix gained 2.7 million global subscribers despite originally projecting a gain of 5 million global subscribers.
Following the show’s cancellation, Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos told The Hollywood Reporter, “Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It to Netflix. While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods.”
According to multiple outlets, Spike Lee will shop the series to other platforms. In addition, Lee will continue to develop the upcoming series, Da 5 Bloods, for Netflix.
