Netflix is already off to a great start this year with new seasons of On My Block and The OA. Over the next few months, the streaming service will also roll out new seasons of She’s Gotta Have It, Stranger Things, Jessica Jones and many more critically acclaimed series. Moving forward, Netflix will look to expand globally. This week, Netflix announced that they would be releasing their first ever animated series based in Africa called Mama K’s Team 4.
Mama K’s Team 4 is a brand new animated series created by Zambian writer, Malenga Mulendema. The series will follow the story of four teenage girls in Zambia who are gathered together by a retired secret agent who believes they can save the world. As described, the show’s style will draw upon Hip-Hop and R&B girl groups of the 1990’s.
Following the announcement of the new series, Malenga Mulendema spoke to the significance of the series. She said, “In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way.” She added, “Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero.”
Netflix’s VP or Original Animation, Melissa Cobb, was equally excited about the series. She said, “We are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix.” She added, “Mama K’s Team 4 has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on-screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.”
Mama K’s Team 4 does not currently have a release date, but it is actively looking for African writers to add to its writing staff. Stay tuned as more details about this groundbreaking series are revealed.
