Suh Takes His Talents To South Beach
Ndamukong Suh will be taking his talents to south beach to join the Miami Dolphins. The deal cannot take place until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Suh’s agent Jimmy Saxton has been shopping his services ever since the legal tampering window opened on Saturday. The Detroit Lions, Suh’s former team opted against using the franchise tag that would have retained his services. Because Ndamukong’s contract fell under the old rookie scale his $26.9 million dollar cap hit for 2015 was to rich for Detroit’s taste.
The deal itself will proclaim Suh the highest paid defensive player ever. The deal that will pay him approximately $114 million with $60 million in guaranteed money. He is expected to receive an average of $19 million over the six years of the deal. Houston Texans star J.J. Watt was previously the highest paid defensive player when he signed a six-year, $100 million contract with $51.8 million guaranteed. Suh is only the 5th non quarterback ever to receive a $100 million dollar contract. The Lions contract fell short of Miami’s offer. Detroit’s final offer came in at $102 million total with 58 million guaranteed. It’s clear Suh was going the highest bidder. Suh spoke to the Detroit free press about which team he would ultimately sign with.
“It’ll be Jimmy’s decision, so we’ll go with that,” Suh said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “You can call Jimmy if you want to.”
Saxton obviously chose to go with the most cash being that agents receive a cut from the deal. Nevertheless Suh is a heck of a player. Only time will tell if the money is well spent. Then again after losing $420,669 due to fines and suspensions it’s easy to see why he took the additional money.
