The NBA Summer League serves two primary purposes. First, it allows teams to see how their young, touted stars will perform in an NBA setting and fit with the team’s other young players. Second, it allows untested players to essentially try out for NBA teams. The Summer League also serves another purpose, at times, however. The NBA sometimes uses Summer League as a test run for new rules. This time, the league is playing with the idea of a new coaches’ challenging mechanism – similar to the NFL with challenge flags – Justin Termine of Sirius XM NBA Radio says Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Kiki VanDeWeghe told him.
Just spoke with Kiki Vandeweghe… He said the NBA will experiment with a challenge flag during Summer League.

Termine later added that the mechanism that coaches will use to challenge calls probably won’t actually be a flag and that it has not been decided on yet.
Update: Challenge mechanism not decided yet, but doubtful a flag will be involved. https://t.co/OdOWRceb0n
