The NBA Referees are rarely a talking point when it comes to crunch time (the last two minutes). This is because they know that when the announcer in any arena shouts “2 MINUTES!” they need to relax and let the players play. Sure there might be that odd 50/50 play that blows up social media for a couple of days. But they’re professionals. They know the score.
But as I said. It rarely happens. Which means that there are times when they screw up. And the Association have made steps towards making Referees better game by game. According to Yahoo! Sports, the NBA will publish reports on every refereeing performance in crunch time.
Starting Monday and continuing throughout the playoffs, the league will release play-by-play reports of all calls and relevant no-calls in the final minutes of close games. Such information had been shared only internally.
The assessments will be released by 5 p.m. the day after each game and will stand as the league’s comment on whether the most disputed calls were correct. The reports will focus on the last two minutes of games that were within five points at the two-minute mark and all of any overtime periods.
This is certainly a great internal assessment. Kind of like a performance rating when it really counts. Great idea NBA.
