Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R Smith has always been one of the most expressive players in the NBA, but this doesn’t mean it always sits well with league offices.
Known for being unapologetically outspoken, Smith took issue with how the league is set to handle a particular tattoo he got this offseason. Smith got a leg tattoo this summer in honor of one of his favorite streetwear brands ‘Supreme’, and it appears that the NBA is set to fine him on a game-by-game basis according to the Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium: NBA informed Cleveland's J.R. Smith he would be fined per game during season for "Supreme" tattoo on his leg, unless it is covered, and Smith plans to have conversations with league about situation.

Smith confirmed the report that the NBA would fine him for his new ink, taking to Instagram to express his frustration with the league’s plans.
Of course, the NBA likely doesn’t want J.R. Smith to be supporting a brand that isn’t a direct sponsor of the league. This could also violate a contractual obligation the NBA has with Nike, the provider of all NBA uniforms and official apparel.
Though Smith plans to discuss this ruling with commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA, it’s hard to envision the ruling being overturned, though it’s also fair for Smith to feel frustrated. Lucky for J.R., he decided to get the brand imprint tattooed on his calf, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to cover up with some leg sleeves.
