In May, news spread that Nas and Lauryn Hill would be touring together for select dates. Now, they’ve announced the tour’s name and some special guests who will be hitting the road with them.
The 17-date PowerNomics tour kicks off tonight in Chicago at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. Comedians Dave Chappelle and Hannibal Buress, rapper Nick Grant and reggae artist Chronixx will appear at select stops during the tour. Chappelle is scheduled to make his lone appearance on the tour at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights, Michigan on Sept. 8.
The tour’s name is a reference to Dr. Claud Anderson’s book with the same name. A portion of the money from ticket sales will go to several Black-owned businesses in the country, including The Harvest Institute, Yes We Code, Equal Justice Initiative, Soronko Academy, NAS’ INITIATIVE, Al Noor Charitable Agency, Habesha, International Peace Initiative and more.
“It is an honor to be on this tour with MLH, and what better time than now, in the midst of the devastation of Hurricane Harvey as well as the dire situation of many African-American communities,” Nas said in a statement.
“I’m excited to share this platform for community, creativity, and progress, helping to expose, educate, and magnify the beauty of cultural amalgamation,” Hill said, according to a news release. An art exhibit featuring Hill’s photography will travel with the tour and revealed on unannounced dates.
