U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi is still putting together the pieces after her husband was brutally attacked in their home last month. Less than two weeks after the traumatic incident, Pelosi sat down with CNN’s Anderson Cooper to discuss the incident on-camera for the first time. During their conversation, Pelosi was transparent and said that the violent attack will impact her decision to remain in office or retire.
“I have to say my decision will be affected [by] what happened the last week or two,” Pelosi told Cooper.
Just a few years ago, Pelosi told her colleagues that she would step away from her position as the House Majority Leader in 2022. However, several of her fellow lawmakers felt that she may stay on just a bit longer if the Democrats were able to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Given recent polls and the violent attack involving her husband, it appears that Pelosi will leave Capitol Hill in the near future.
On October 28, 42-year-old David DePape broke into a residence owned by the Pelosis and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer. Authorities arrived shortly thereafter and arrested DePape. Meanwhile, Paul Pelosi was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent skull surgery.
“I was sleeping in Washington, D.C., I had just gotten in the night before from San Francisco, and I hear the doorbell ring and think, it’s five something, I look up I see it’s five, it must be the wrong apartment. No. It rings again and then bang, bang, bang, bang, bang on the door,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi told Cooper about the incident.
“So I run to the door and I was very scared, I see the Capitol Police, and they said we have to come in to talk to you.”
Paul Pelosi is expected to enter rehab and make a full recovery. However, DePape has been charged with assault and attempted murder.
