An historic season for the Golden State Warriors concluded in the most ideal fashion, an NBA championship. They dazzled us with their uptempo style and high-octane three-point shooting combined with an efficiently elite defense. Now an even bigger challenge presents itself for the Warriors: defending their title.
Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson’s father, Mychal Thompson, spoke on his son’s team’s chances of repeating next season on SiriusXM NBA Radio, contending that they have the opportunity to be even better for years to come:
Thompson makes valid points, particularly from the standpoint of the Warriors’ youth and the chemistry they’ve developed as a group. There’s no question that their championship experience and “know-how” gives them an edge as they look to defend their title next season. Thompson thinks that complacency and nerves won’t be an issue for the Warriors because they’ve tasted the champion’s elixir.
Having been on a Los Angeles Lakers team that repeated, Mychal Thompson knows from personal accord what it’s like to pursue that challenge. The Warriors have established themselves as the elite of the elite, and now their significant challenge will be to keep themselves there.
