The days of “Don’t Tell ‘Em” with Jeremih and “Or Nah” with Ty Dolla $ign will always be celebrated, but Mustard is ready to begin a new chapter in his musical journey. Five years after releasing Perfect Ten, Mustard has released a new project called Faith Of A Mustard Seed. As always, he shows his ability to make a club hit, but he also uses the project to showcase other tools in his arsenal. Most notably, the album’s outro, “Pray For Me,” showcases his ability as a rapper. From opening up about his father’s deportation to discussing his past dispute with TeeFLii, he uses a Gospel choir as the backdrop to dive deeper into his personal life.
“I knew if I was going to do this right there was only [one] person to go to. So this is my testimony. Straight from the source,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Only Faith could have helped me overcome all the obstacles I seen in my life to get me where I am today. Thank you to everyone that’s been rockin with me on this journey. Know I’m praying for you so y’all should pray for me too.”
The project also highlights his ability to spotlight artists from different generations. Faith Of A Mustard Seed features artists like 42 Dugg and Rob49 as well as Charlie Wilson and Kirk Franklin. As he explained in a recent interview with Billboard, his mother is part of the reason for the album’s diversity.
“I was talking to my Mom on the phone one day and she was like, ‘You need to make me a song that I would like. Something for the older [crowd].’ She’s a really big Luther Vandross fan, [so] I sampled a song from Luther Vandross. I grew up hearing so much Luther Vandross in the house. I’m talking like…die hard Luther Vandross. Once I made that song, Masego played on the song. Ty [Dolla Sign] is on the song. Charlie Wilson is on the song,” he said.
The song Mustard references is appropriately titled, “A Song For Mom.” Other featured artists on the project are Travis Scott, BLXST, Quavo, Roddy Ricch, Lil’ Durk, Young Thug, ScHoolboy Q, BlueBucksClan, Lil’ Yachty and Vince Staples. Check out the complete project below.
