Toronto has delivered a number of talented musicians over the years that have gone on to have massive success. From Melanie Fiona to Drake, the city’s diverse nature has produced a variety of artists that look at the world in different ways. Thus, they create unique songs and evoke unique feelings out of listeners. With all that said, no one that has emerged out of Toronto sounds quite like Mustafa.
At just 24 years old, Mustafa has greatly impacted both the world of poetry and the world of music. Through his talents and efforts, he’s connected with The Weeknd, Drake, Frank Dukes and Ryan Tedder. He stepped out of the background and into the forefront with his “Stay Alive” video just days before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world. Throughout the year, he continued to engage fans with his soft yet heartfelt vocals. This week, he took another step forward by dropping his first full-length project, When Smoke Rises.
When Smoke Rises sounds very much like an autobiography. Over the course of eight songs, he celebrates how far he’s come while looking back at all that he’s lost. He showcases the awareness of a young Nas with the vocals of a Sampha. In one word, he’s special. Check out his debut project below.
