The world of R&B, Soul, and popular music is in mourning.
On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the family of four-time GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist D’Angelo announced that the legendary singer had passed away after a bout with pancreatic cancer. The Richmond, Virginia native was a young 51-years-old. In the immediate aftermath of his passing, his collaborators, fellow Virginia natives, friends, fans, and all-around supporters shared their condolences.
“Rest Peacefully D’Angelo,” Missy Elliott wrote. “No parent want to see their children go but it’s painful for children to see their parents go to so send prayers up for his son who also lost his mom this year for strength.”
“Lemme stop you now,” Jill Scott added. “A mutual friend shared that our beloved D’Angelo was unwell a few days ago. I sent LOVE yesterday. I didn’t know he was leaving us TODAY. Oooooooh my condolences to his family, his musical fam and fans. I am a fan and I mourn. D. Ketaton & now D’Angelo. Hurts.”
D’Angelo had appeared in public less and less frequently within the last few years. However, he still made his way to the Verzuz stage and Netflix Is A Joke with Dave Chappelle. He even attempted to perform at The Roots Picnic earlier this year, but was unable due to his medical challenges.
The Richmond native leaves behind three children, several close friends and family members, millions of fans, and a world that is better having heard his music.
