Cyntoia Brown begins to tell her story in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming documentary, Murder To Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story. Throughout the trailer, Netflix highlights footage of Cyntoia Brown speaking as a free woman, her battles in court and much more. Along the way, the soundbites of the legal team that unjustly put her behind bars are also spotlighted.
“After 16-year-old Cyntoia Brown is sentenced to life in prison, questions about her past, physiology and the law itself call her guilt into question,” Netflix writes.
Brown rose to national prominence three years ago when her legal battle caught the attention of Rihanna, T.I. and a number of other celebrities who advocated on her behalf. Brown had been convicted of shooting and killing a man who had paid $150 to have sex with her. Only 16 years old at the time, Brown argued that she feared for her life during the encounter and acted in self defense. Tragically, she was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
After serving fifteen years, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam commuted her sentence and Brown entered the world as a free woman in August 2019. Since her release, Brown has published a memoir and appeared on the Today Show and CBS News.
Murder To Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story will debut on Netflix on April 29, 2020.
