Moses Malone, three-time NBA Most Valuable Player and ninth overall scoring leader in NBA history, is set to have his number retired by the Philadelphia 76ers and receive a statue in the team’s training complex as part of the 76ers Legends Walk.
The 76ers have announced that they plan to honor Malone in a ceremony on February 8th, during halftime of the Sixers home game against the Denver Nuggets. As part of the occasion, the Sixers have announced that all fans in attendance for the Sixers-Nuggets game will receive a limited-edition Mitchell and Ness Moses Malone T-shirt.
Elton Brand, General Manager for the 76ers, had the following to say in regards to the news:
“Moses Malone is one of the NBA’s all-time elite players and someone who propelled our organization to great heights. He is a three-time MVP, 13-time All-Star, one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, an NBA champion and a worthy Hall of Famer. He embodies what our program is striving to achieve, and he has earned the great honor of having his jersey retired and his sculpture unveiled by the 76ers.”
A six-time NBA rebounding leader, Malone was initially set to have his number retired by the 76ers during the 2016-17 season, but those plans never materialized. Malone passed away in September 2015, and has since had his number 24 posthumously retired by another team he found great success with, the Houston Rockets.
