Monty Williams went through unspeakable tragedy last season. While working for the OKC Thunder, the assistant coach learned that his wife had passed away in an automobile accident. Williams was unable to finish the rest of the season with the team as he had to take care of the five children she left behind.
Williams has returned to coaching in some capacity now. He is an assistant for Team USA as they prepare for the Rio Olympics starting in a week.
He recently spoke with Hannah Storm of ESPN about the difficulties he went through regarding his wife’s passing. And in a heart-breaking moment, Williams revealed that he often texts his late wife or speaks to her while looking up at the sky.
At her funeral, Williams wowed everyone with the strength he showed in his speech. No one can imagine the pain that he must have been going through at the time. But Williams was able to show remarkable strength in front of his family even after losing someone he had been with for 26 years.
Williams revealed that his circumstances are now at a position where he can see himself returning to coaching. No one could blame Monty Williams if he decided to never return to his career. But as he put it, “Quitting is not an option.”
