As the Playoffs began earlier on this weekend for everybody, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, they’ve announced that Monty Williams will not return as assistant coach. The tragedy of his wife’s death in a car accident back in February caused Monty to be away from the team since then, and now he’s decided to no longer continue coaching, at least for the time being.
As the Oklahoman mentions:
A few months ago, the organization announced he wouldn’t return this season. Moving into next year, Williams is not expected to return to the Thunder coaching staff, The Oklahoman has learned. His NBA coaching future remains uncertain.
But Williams will return to coaching in another capacity. This summer, Williams will help out with Team USA as they prepare and play in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
With Williams not helping out on the bench this year for the Thunder, it does hurt them. The lose some experienced coaching, especially when they have an inexperienced playoff coach in Billy Donovan. Nevertheless, the reason is warranted. Either way, I personally hope we do get to see Monty Williams back on the sideline in the NBA, but we will get to catch him coaching a couple of his ex-players for the USA team. There are a couple of teams looking for new head coaches this season like the Sacramento Kings. Who knows, Monty Williams may make a comeback.
