The rap icon is breaking barriers and receiving the recognition she deserves.
According to the Associated Press, rap icon Missy Elliott has become the first female rapper nominated into the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame. With this nomination, Elliott could also become the third rapper ever inducted after Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri. Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years. Elliott expressed on twitter,
“I am Humbly Grateful to be nominated with so many other AMAZING writers. Congratulations to all of them also.”
Throughout Elliott’s decades-long successful career, she’s not only made ground-breaking records and music videos as a solo artist, but she’s also written and produced songs for big-time names like Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Monica, and many more.
Associated Press also reports that “joining Elliott as performing nominees are Mariah Carey, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill, Mike Love, Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Lloyd Price, Tommy James and the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart).”
In total, six songwriters or songwriting groups will be inducted at the Hall’s 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 13, 2019. Congratulations to Missy Elliott and the rest of the nominees! View the full list of nominees here.
