Mike Scott has been cleared of all felony drug charges by a Georgia judge, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. Scott was initially charged in June with possession of marijuana and MDMA (Molly), with the potential to serve 25 years in prison for the crime.
The former Hawk had his case thrown out in part due to the county’s reputation for racial profiling. In effect, the judge’s ruling stated that there was no reason to stop Scott (who was driving at the time of the arrest) and there was no probable cause for his arrest.
Scott’s attorney, via Woj:
“In my 35 years of practicing law, this could be the worst case of racial profiling I have ever seen,” Steve Weiner, counsel for Mike Scott, told The Vertical. “Hopefully this will lead to Banks County, Georgia, re-evaluating their policies.”
Scott was traded by the Hawks to the Phoenix Suns at the trade deadline but he was immediately waived. According to Woj, several playoff teams were interested in signing Scott for the postseason but ultimately decided against it due to his court case.
It’s unclear if Scott will face disciplinary action from the league due to the possession of the drugs; he played 18 games this season, all following his arrest. However, this news brings him closer to making a comeback.
