Super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer may look to move up in weight sometime soon.
“This is my last year at [the] 130 [pound division]. It’s time for me to move up. [I’m] taking a fight in April while I wait for Choi [Hyun-mi to fight Alycia] Baumgardner. When I outbox the sh*t out of [Baumgardner] for [the] undisputed [super featherweight title], I would love to defend against [Delfine] Persoon but only if we get the ball rolling!! This is all do-able in one year,” she wrote.
Fellow super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner did not take kindly to Mayer’s words. Coming off of a knockout win against Terri Harper, Baumgardner is also hoping to unify the division’s four belts. While Mayer is confident, Baumgardner also believes that she is the woman to beat in the division.
“The excuses! [I’ll] see you at [the] 135 [pound] division. You [are] gonna get these handless regardless,” Baumgardner replied.
Despite Baumgardner’s public challenge, Mayer says that her potential opponent has not called out her out.
“When? I’m literally waiting on you, but you wanna fight Choi instead. [You] havent said my name once,” she answered.
A lot could be at stake if the two champions win. This spring, Katie Taylor will fight Amanda Serrano for the undisputed lightweight title. The undisputed super featherweight champion could move up to fight the undisputed lightweight champion in one of the biggest fights in women’s boxing history.
