Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor’s undisputed lightweight title fight has been billed as the biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing, but it may not be the only big fight on the horizon. Recently, junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer hinted that she may want to fight the winner of the highly-anticipated bout.
“I’m game to go up and challenge the winner of Serrano versus Katie Taylor,” she said earlier this month, according to ESPN.
While a potential bout with Katie Taylor or Amanda Serrano would excite fans, it appears that Eddie Hearn, Katie Taylor’s lead promoter, does not like the idea as much. Instead, Hearn feels that Mayer should focus on fighting his other client, fellow junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner.
“There’s only one fight for Mayer: Alicia Baumgardner. We need an undisputed champion at 130 pounds,” Hearn said during a recent episode of The DAZN Boxing Show.
Mayer has said that she is interested in that fight as well, but she is unsure about when or if it would happen this year. As a result, she is looking to make other major fights happen in the meantime.
“I’ve been pretty clear that I want to go undisputed at 130. Baumgardner and Choi, I’ve been calling them out. I want that fight, but if they’re not going to give me that fight in a timely fashion, I’m down, I’m game to go up [in weight],” Mayer said after defeating Jennifer Han on April 9, 2022.
“If we can make it happen this year, I would love that. But that fight with Mayer needs to be built, just like the Amanda [Serrano] and Katie [Taylor undisputed lightweight championship] fight,” Baumgardner countered days later during an open media workout, according to Boxing Scene.
With Mayer seemingly becoming impatient and Baumgardner looking to fight WBA titlist Hyun Mi Choi, everything appears to be in limbo for the time being.
