WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo has been charged with felony robbery after he allegedly failed to pay a “large bar bill” in Texas. According to Texas court records, Charlo was booked on three counts of second-degree robbery stemming before posting bail and being released.
The incident in question took place hours after Charlo’s brother, Jermell, fought Brian Castaño for the undisputed junior middleweight title on July 17 in San Antonio. Charlo reportedly traveled to a bar in San Antonio with friends. While there, the WBC middleweight champion allegedly failed to pay a “large bar bill” after his credit card was declined three times. After being informed that his credit card was declined, Charlo allegedly accused the waitress of losing his credit card and demanded that she pay the bill instead. As the encounter escalated, bar employees claim the boxer began threatening them.
“[I will] f— you all’s s— up,” an affidavit claims Charlo yelled at bar staff.
Also, the affidavit claims there is video of Charlo going through a collection binder in the restaurant that contained his ID and another customer’s cash. When the collection binders were returned, the bar staff claims that they were empty.
Charlo’s attorney, Kent A. Schaffer, has issued a statement refuting the allegations made against him. Schaffer states that Charlo was able to pay the large bar tab, but the establishment had lost his debit card which prompted an outburst.
“I want to make clear that Jermall stole no money from anyone at the club and made no threats toward anyone,” Schaffer told TMZ Sports.
“When (the club) ran his card, it was declined and he then received a fraud alert from Chase Bank asking if he had made the charge. He responded yes and they told him to have the charge submitted again. The waitress went to run it again and came back saying she could not find the card. Jermall was upset that his card was missing since it was a debit card tied to an account with a substantial amount of money.”
Second-degree robbery in the state of Texas carries a fine of up to $10,000 along with a potential jail sentence that can carry anywhere from two to 20 years in prison.
