Former First Lady Michelle Obama says she’s “terrified” about what could happen in the upcoming presidential election.
“Our leaders matter. Who we select, who speaks for us, who holds that bully pulpit – it affects us in ways that sometimes I think people take for granted,” Obama told On Purpose Host Jay Shetty.
“I am terrified about what could possibly happen.”
Heading into the upcoming election, the former First Lady alluded to her fears regarding the lack of importance some may place on the federal government. She later added that we “sometimes” take “democracy for granted.”
“Those are the things that keep me up,” Obama continued.
While the former First Lady did not identify former President Donald Trump by name, she did allude to him during her conversation with On Purpose Host Jay Shetty. Particularly, she noted that “other people can be indicted a bunch of times and still run for office,” but “Black men can’t.”
“We can’t just say what the first thing that comes to our minds. That is not authenticity to me,” Obama mentioned.
“That’s childish, and we see childish leadership right before us – what that looks like and how that feels, where somebody is just base, and vulgar and cynical in a leadership position.”
At the moment, Trump and Obama’s close ally, President Joe Biden, appear to be in a dead heat as the election year begins. The latest Morning Consult poll puts the incumbent one point ahead of the challenger while the latest Emerson College polls put Trump ahead of Biden by at least two points.
