Michael Vick has not played a game since 2015 but has been trending recently.
In a podcast interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Vick said he wants to be a coach in the National Football League.
“I would love to coach in the National Football League one day. At some point, I’d definitely love to help work with young quarterbacks and develop them and still compete, you know, with the team and with the coaches.
“It’s another way to chase a championship. You know I’m not done. I’m not done by any means. You know I didn’t get the championship when I was playing, so, hey, maybe I’d get lucky one year, maybe fortunate enough to join the staff that may be good enough.
“I think my heart is really into teaching, you know, the game of football. I feel like I’ve learned so much from so many great coaches over the years. You know, I don’t want to bottle up a lot of knowledge, and [I] really can’t relay the messages that I want to relay to a high school kid because — you don’t have to dumb it down, but you can’t be as complex. And I get that.
“I know there are enough coaches out there that I know who, you know, have enough respect for me and my understanding of the game and know that I can bring value. So I just want to take it slow and just let it happen naturally.”
Before Vick can think about becoming a coach, he should focus on his retirement plans. So far, it has been a lengthy process.
On Jan 30, 2017, Vick said he was ready to call it a career in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Jonathan Jones.
“Yeah, I think it’s it. I’m kind of looking at life from a different perspective now. I’ve got kids growing that I’ve got to be there for. I was committed in 2016 to giving it one more shot. I’m very content with my career and what I’ve been able to accomplish. I accomplished more than I ever thought I would. Listen, at the end of the day, through all the downs I played, I can say I won a game for every team that I played for, even though I only made three starts in New York and three starts in Pittsburgh. I made a difference, I’m content with my career and I’m ready to move forward in life.”
Fast forward to May 28, 2017. There have been reports that Vick wants to retire as an Atlanta Falcon. In an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta, he said nothing was imminent.
“No, that’s something that we’re working on that’s not in stone. I don’t know who’s written that or wrote it. You know we had some conversation about it on the radio station the other day and people blew out of proportion, but hey man, hopefully, that’s something we can get done one day.”
“That has to come from the higher ups in the organization. You know I’m patient. You know they’ve been patient with me. So, I expect nothing but the best in the future.”
Vick was drafted No. 1 by the Falcons in 2001. He spent his first six seasons in Atlanta and put up dazzling numbers. He was named to three Pro Bowls and rushed for 1,039 yards in ’06-’07, holding the record for most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback.
Vick’s career took a violent turn after that historic season. If you somehow forgot what happened, think dogs. He was suspended from the NFL indefinitely after being found guilty of running a dogfighting ring in 2007. He did not resume his NFL career until 2009 when he landed a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
I love the idea of Vick retiring a Falcon and I feel Falcons fans out there do too. Vick was loved by the city of Atlanta for his explosive gameplay and talent. Fans had not witnessed a quarterback of his measure and he had Falcons fans flooding into the Georgia Dome to watch him.
Here is what I want to ask you, the reader.
Do you think Vick would make a good coach in the NFL today?
Only time will tell.
