President-Elect Joe Biden has nominated North Carolina’s environment secretary Michael Regan as the next head of the Environmental Protection Agency. If confirmed, Regan will help to enact Biden’s “ambitious” climate strategies as the first Black EPA chief.
“Michael operates with the belief that really every North Carolinian deserves clean air and clean water,” Regan’s former colleague Hawley Truax said.

Regan will be joined by Rep. Deb Haaland of the Interior Department, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and Brenad Mallory on the President-Elect’s newly former environmental taskforce. Together, they will work to create one million clean energy jobs in the auto industry and implement a carbon-free electric sector by 2035.
“We will be driven by our convictions that every person in our great country has the right to clean air, clean water and a healthier life, no matter how much money they have in their pockets, the color of their skin or the community that they live in,” Regan said.
“We will move with a sense of urgency on climate change, protecting our drinking water and enact an environmental justice framework that empowers people in all communities.”
