It is often said that “Father Time” is undefeated. While athletes like Tom Brady and Bernard Hopkins have been able to stave off the force of time much longer than others, it often catches up to all in the end. This evening, “Father Time” scored another victory as 38-year-old former champion Lamont Peterson suffered a fourth-round stoppage defeat at the hands of Michael Ogundo.
Peterson returned to the ring after spending nearly fours away from the sport of boxing, but Ogundo proved to be too much for the experienced veteran. The Massachusetts-based fighter hurt the hometown fighter in the third round before knocking him down in the fourth round. Peterson was able to beat the count, but the referee was forced to step in to stop the fight moments later.
Peterson’s homecoming bout did not deliver the shining moment that he had hoped, but it did little to break the bond between himself and the nation’s capital. Having won world titles as both a super lightweight and welterweight, he has cemented himself as one of the greatest fighters to come out of the nation’s capital in recent memory.
In the end, Peterson moves to 35-6-1 while Michael Ogundo improves to 17-16 with 14 knockouts.
