Michael Jordan is 52 years old, but still thinks he can hang with the new young talent of the NBA. The greatest player of all time is currently in France representing the Jordan Brand at their Quai 54 streetball tournament.
Jordan, who was known as a heavy trash talker during his playing days, clearly hasn’t forgotten that talent, telling French media outlet L’Equipe he’d beat some of the players on the Hornets, the team he owns, in a game of one-on-one.
L’Equipe: “Do you think you can play against some of your guys right now? Do you sometimes do that or not? Could you win on one-on-ones against them?”
“I’m pretty sure I can,” Jordan said. “I don’t want to do that and demolish their confidence. So I stay away from them, I let them think they’re good, but I’m too old to do that anyway.
Yes Jordan can still hoop, we’ve seen video evidence of that. Could he beat some of his players, probably. To be fair though the Hornets, outside of Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson, don’t really have a lot of “talent.”
Jordan did sign Lance Stephenson last offseason after he had a career year with the Pacers, but Stephenson is playing like he left his talent on Moron Mountain (cue drums.) So yes congrats MJ, we all know you can take your players in a pick up game, but for the sake of the team you own, do them a favor and get them some talent so they can win games and get to the playoffs. If that means having to take the “L” in a game of one-on one, I think it’s a good risk and a chance worth taking.
