Hornets owner Michael Jordan is donating $7 million to launch two Novant Health medical clinics in “troubled areas” of Charlotte, report Deon Roberts and Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.
One location will be at 3149 and 3153 Freedom Drive, and the other will be in the Brightwalk development on Statesville Avenue.
The two clinics will target a crescent-shaped region which is one of the most impoverished areas in Charlotte. The two clinics are expected to open in 2020.
Novant Health is expected to make the announcement at some point on Monday.
Jordan spokeswoman Estee Portnoy told the Observer that Jordan began talks with Novant Health about 16 months ago.
Per Roberts and Bonnell, Portnoy said that Jordan was inspired by a 2014 study from Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley that found poor children in Charlotte have the worst odds at escaping poverty of those in any major U.S. city.
In a statement, Jordan said that he hopes that the clinics “will help provide a brighter and healthier future for the children and families they serve.”
This is an extremely generous donation to an amazing cause. Kudos, MJ.
