In light of the recent R. Kelly documentary, a number of documentaries regarding past behavior of major entertainers have gotten more attention. One of those documentaries to receive more attention is Leaving Neverland, which explores the infamous Neverland ranch owned by Michael Jackson. The film discusses several cases of alleged sexual misconduct involving a number of children and the Pop icon. This week, the highly controversial film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
According to a number of reports, Leaving Neverland received a standing ovation following its premiere. As described by Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press, “It’s not uncommon for audiences at the Sundance Film Festival to give standing ovations, but the ceremonial act took on a solemn air as two men who accuse Michael Jackson of molesting them as boys walked onstage following the festival’s only screening of Leaving Neverland.”
Michael Jackson’s estate swiftly responded by stating the documentary is “the kind of tabloid character assassination Michael Jackson endured in life, and now in death.” Michael Jackson’s estate also added, “The film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact.”
The documentary will premiere later this year on HBO.
