During his lifetime, Michael Jackson was the biggest pop star in the world. From his musical performances, guest television spots and commercial appearances, Jackson was anywhere and everywhere. In his passing, his legacy has only grown stronger through his music and influence. This week, it was announced that his legacy and influence will live on in a new way. While details are still few and far between, it appears that there is a Michael Jackson musical in the works.
The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have announced that they will be bringing a Michael Jackson inspired musical to a Broadway stage. According to their joint press release, the Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have recruited Pultizer Prize Winner, Lynn Nottage and Tony Award winner, Christopher Wheeldon. The team behind the musical have also given their work a 2020 release date.
Given Jackson’s extensive catalog that stretches from his Motown days to Thriller, the team behind the musical will definitely have a lot to work with while putting together this show. If brought to life, Michael Jackson would join the likes of Tina Turner, Cher, The Temptations and Dona Summer as musicians that have had their lives envisioned through theater.
