The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have hired Penn State Nittany Lions Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry as the program’s next Head Coach. This deal is reportedly for seven years and will pay Shrewsberry an average of four million dollars per year. Former Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey announced in January that he would not be returning to the program next season. At the time he was retiring, but later he clarified that he did plan to coach again, just not with the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame began negotiations with Shrewsberry after Penn State was knocked out of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

In two seasons as the Head Coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Micah Shrewsberry led the team to an overall record of 37-31 and a Big Ten record of 17-23. While the team did not make the 2022 NCAA Tournament they did make the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The team even made the Round of 32 where they were eliminated. While Penn State did make an attempt and offer to keep Shrewsberry, it was not enough to keep him with the program.
Notre Dame has gone through a period of transition in sports the past few seasons with both Brian Kelly in football and Mike Brey in baseball now gone. Micah Shrewsberry has only been a Head Coach for two seasons but has plenty of experience as an assistant coach. He also looked incredibly promising during his two years with Penn State.
